Today I have the pleasure of introducing Chick-lit writer, Deborah Nam-Krane

Please tell us a little about your latest novel?
My latest novel is The Family You Choose, the second installment in my series, The New Pioneers. We met Miranda Harel in The Smartest Girl in the Room. She was instrumental in bringing Emily and Mitch, the romantic heroes of the first book, together. But while her good friend Emily is analytical and calculating, Miranda is softer and more inclined to believe in happily ever after- and people's essential goodness, particularly that of her guardian, Alex Sheldon. She is in a rude awakening when she discovers the truth about her parents and does something that shocks her friends. Miranda's story is about having to make choices…and the importance of having all of the information you need before you do.
What inspired you to become a writer?
I think I prefer to think of myself as a storyteller, and I've always done that, pretty much since I could talk. For me it was more a question of how I wanted to tell the story, and I decided when I was in my early teens that novels were the easiest way for me to get my stories across.
Are you a panster or a plotter?
I am a plotter! As Patti Larsen noted, when you plan ahead of time, you can give the logical part of your brain a break when you actually go to write and let your creative brain take over or, as I prefer to think of it, you can let your characters take over. Don't worry- there's still plenty of room to be surprised when you plot!
Is there another genre you would like to write in?
I am really comfortable in Romance/Chick Lit, or what I broadly think of as Women's Fiction. But I would love to stretch out just a little bit into Mystery. My favorite books recently have been Chick Lit Mysteries: Bird of Prey by Danielle-Claude Ngontang-Mba, It's Just A Little Crush by Caroline Fardig and Unfinished Business by Carolyn Ridder Aspenson. I also had this weird fetish for Hercule Poirot last year, and then my early love of Nancy Drew!
The third installment in my series has some mystery, but I wouldn't classify it as such. Maybe for the 8th book!
What are you working on next?
I've already sent drafts of my third and fourth installments to my editor, so right now I'm concentrating on planning out my fifth book. This is going to be in the same universe and many characters we've previously met will be important in this story, but I have two other very important new characters who are driving a different kind of story than what I've written before. Big, broad hint: it's about local politics. I'm very fortunate that I know at least a few people who can help me with "research".
Deborah Nam-Krane has been writing in one way or another since she was eight years old (and telling stories well before that). Her series, The New Pioneer debuted in March with The Smartest Girl in the Room. The sequel The Family You Choose will be published at the end of September.

Nineteen year old Emily wants her college diploma fast, and she's going to get it. But when the perfect night with perfect Mitch leads her to a broken heart, Emily is blind to her vulnerability. When the person she cares about the most is hurt as a result, Emily's ambition gives way to more than a little ruthlessness. She's going to use her smarts to take care of herself and protect the people she loves, and everyone else had better stay out of her way. But shouldn't the smartest girl everyone knows realize that the ones she'd cross the line for would do the same for her?
